I am not able to defrag my computer. When I try to run the defrag utility all
my computer does is just sit there and does not respond. Can someone PLEASE
help me with this problem and let me know what the cause might be and what I
can do about it?

Hi

Can you run

defrag

from a command prompt?

Or from Start>Run

dfrg.msc

Does the Defrag screen appear then?

How big is the drive?

Does it have at least 15 percent free space?

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze in Disk Defragmenter
(dfrg.msc).

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set Startup type to Automatic | Click OK | Close Services |
Reboot

[[ Note the following things will fail if this service is not running:
The builtin defrag will fail to work, and if running defrag from the command
line one gets this error:
Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine ]]

Hope this helps. Let us know.

i would have no idea how to run it from a command prompt. I am really
inexperienced with that.

Thank you Mr. Vogel. I will try that and see if that fixes my problem. With
all my Windows experience from 95 to XP I have never seen anything like it
where you have to start a service to defra. Windows xp can be so
exasperating. Instead of making things simpler they make things harder.

It only started with SP2.

I have SP1 and do not even have the DCOM Server Process Launcher service.

Windows XP *is* more complicated than Windows 9x.

Other things will not work if DCOM Server Process Launcher service is not
running.

start menu > run command > type 'cmd' (no quotes).

then at the prompt, defrag [drive] [option]

If you type defrag -? you get the list of options.
