Did you get an actual Windows XP CD?

no the OS came already installed

That alone does not preclude you from getting an actual Windows XP
Installation CD.

They have to give you a way to recover the PC in case of a problem (or just
in case you want to.) Many companies now give consumers better choices
(without them having to ask) - but most consumers do not know the difference
and since they are not necessarily spelled out - just made available - most
consumers go with the default - which may be nothing more than a hidden
partition that you can boot to and restore the system from. Bad idea -
because if the hard disk drive dies - so does the restoration method.

Some have utilities that create restoration or actual Windows CDs that you
can run after you purchase the computer. This is better - but not as good -
in my opinion - as just having the actual install CD.

What I would do - if I were in your shoes and had just bought the PC - is
call the company you purchased it from and ask to get an actual Windows XP
installation CD.
