i am running xp home and 1) it keeps just shutting down,
2) it wont now let me access netnanny and gives all sorts
of error codes - when i re-enter my password it fails to
retain this and sends an error message about 'nn tray'. I
am a novice user but would like to know if there is
anything i can do other than asking someone to take my pc
away and look at it
many thanks

Just a guess... why don't you try to uninstall NetNanny, and then reinstall
it. Perhaps that will clear up the problems you are having

Prior to shutting down, are there any messages displayed? This could be a
symptom of a virus/worm infection. Do you run a virus program? Have you
updated XP with the latest security updates from Microsoft?

if a message telling you that windows is shutting down
and you have 1 minute to save all information, then you
have the msblast worm virus and you will need to download
the extraction software in order to get rid of it, you
can delete it straight from your files but this is harder
to do on the later versions of this virus.

Download all the latest security updates and run the
extraction software. Most ISP's provide information on
how to do this and where to get the extractors from.
