My XP has crashed. It started a month ago when I got an
automatic update from Microsoft. When I rebooted my
computer, it crashed, and went into a "loop" of crashing,
partially booting, and then crashing again. It did this
about 6 times, and then it came right the next day, when I
received another Microsoft update, and started working
properly again. Now, it's crashed, in the same "loop" as
before, only this time it hasn't fixed itself, like
before. I tried inserting the XP disc again, but it
returned a message stating that it couldn't find my
software. XP will reinstall itself, but will reformat my
hard drive, and I still have lots of applications and
files that I really don't want to lose. Any ideas?

Well it appears that you either have a Virus or that the
updates are causing this... do 1 of two things. Boot in
Safe Mode (hit F8 after the mem test)Go to Control Panel -
Add/Remove Programs and remove the last 2 updates then
reboot normally... See if the loop comes back. If it
does, you might have a virus, you need to clean your pc.
If it doesn't then go to Windows Update and get the
latest updates...hopefully a new release of the updates
will be out there and you should be ok.

The W32/SWEN@mm comes on a bogus Microsoft e-mail that they do not send
....they never do. If you have your real e-mail address up in these groups,
be prepared to get them ... it's the nature of newsgroups now that these
worms attach to.

An automatic update is not an e-mail with an attachment, something Microsoft
never does with either security or update announcements. Automatic Update
is a feature enabled by default on Windows XP that notifies the user of
critical updates that are now available for download and asks users if they
wish to download and install. These are not viruses nor are they
attachments but because of the nature of such updates and the wide variety
of hardware configurations, they can cause problems on some systems.
