Windows XP continually stalls on loading

Over the past couple of weeks Win XP has consistently stalled during
loading - the splash screen comes up with the "blue dots" that move
across the bar. At some point during the loading process these blue
dots stop moving and I have no choice but to restart the computer.

Initially restoring to the "last format that worked" enabled me to
load Win XP, as did going to safe mode. Eventually I was unable to
load XP via any means and did a complete reinstall. That worked for a
couple of days, but again I am having the problem with the blue dots
stopping. I have tried starting in safe mode using the Restore Point
option, but that hasn't helped either. I have also tried the debug
mode, and the bootlog mode. I'm not even sure what's meant to happen
there. In Win 98 the bootlog mode provided a text file which you
could read to see where the problem was happening - in Win XP when I
ask for the bootlog mode I get no text file in the root directory of
my XP partition, and the debug mode doesn't give a step-by-step view
of the loading process as I could see in Win98.

I really do not want to reinstall Win XP - especially as that is
obviously not going to fix the problem for good.

I am desperate for help with this. I do have a Win98 partition, which
gives me access to my computer (and hence the internet, hence the
ability to post here;) but I have programs on my XP partition that I
need urgently.

What can I do?

Thanks
Di

Hi di-y,

The bootlog mode does give you a file, it's just not quite so obvious. You
want to search the system root for ntbtlog.txt, this is the file resulting
from a logged boot. This may help:
