Make sure your Excel version is of the same language version as Windows XP
(i.e. English).

"Error 1608. Setup Could Not Locate a Version of Microsoft Office 97, 2000 or XP On the Selected Drive" Error
Message When You Run Office 2003 Setup

Did the Inspiron have MSworksuite installed ?
I have heard of an inability to install Office over worksuite.
Perhaps you could 'phone Dell help line to confirm this.
Good luck

do you have administrator rights?
