Hi all,

I get a PC come with Windows XP home COA (I am sure it is real), and the windows XP home is activte already. However, I do not have Windows XP home CD. Just wonder can I order the CD from microsoft (of cause, not paying the full price :) ?

I do have a windows XP pro. CD from other PC though. Are they the same?

Thanks

Contact the manufacturer of your computer and order their
OEM version of Windows XP designed to be used with your
specific model computer. The XP Pro CD you have is of no
use to you.

Check the Product I.D. code for your installed Windows XP by opening
Control Panel - System - General.

The 20 character Product I.D. is shown on the last line in the
"Licensed to:" section. Note that this is *not* the product key that
is used to install Windows, although it is derived from it.

If the second segment of the Product I.D. reads OEM then your
installed Windows XP is an OEM version. If the second segment is a 3
digit number then it is a retail or volume license version.

Microsoft will provide replacements for lost or damaged retail CDs (at
a moderate cost) but will not provide OEM replacements except under
very special circumstances. Your OEM having gone out of business
might repeat might qualify as one of these.

No. Microsoft doesn't support your OEM version. Depending on who your OEM
is, you may or may not be able to get a CD from them, and the price may or
may not be full.

Personall, I would never choose to buy a computer that came with Windows
preinstalled, unless it also came with an installation CD (not a restore
CD).

No.

No.

However, if your XP Pro CD is a FULL RETAIL edition (it will do either
an upgrade install or a clean install, and came in a blue plastic box
with Microsoft branding), you CAN transfer the license to the computer
in question, IF it is removed from the OTHER PC.

IF the version of XP Pro CD is an OEM version (the COA will tell you
if it is), it cannot be moved to the computer in question.

Hi,

Thanks for all the ans.

Anyway, I find a windows xp home (sp1) CD (retail version) over the weekend. Just wonder can I use it for install any needed component, such as lang package, or do I need to get a windows xp home (sp2) CD?

I do not need to reinstall or anything, just may need to add some components later.

cheers,
