In previous version of Windows the Scandisk program would
prompt you to to convert lost fragments to a file or free
up the disk space. You could also change this setting in
the configuration file so that the autoscan would take
the option of your choice.

How do I setup the XP Chkdsk to automatically delete lost
fragments rather than convert them to files?

You will need to run chkdsk from a command line.
Go to Start/Help and Support and search for chkdsk. It will show the
syntax for the commands you will need.
