Are the windows XP CDs duplicates or unique?
In other words, is each CD customized for each product ID?
Or, does MS just stamp out duplicate CDs, and let the product ID
satisfy identification/tracking?

The cd's are not unique. The product key is not contained in the cd. The
product key is on the sleeve and is subjected to an algorithm during the
activation process. I believe a valid result is one that falls within a
range of values, but don't hold me to that. The final outcome is the
Product ID (PID).

Hi,

The CD's are duplicates, though there are some variations in how setup
initiates (upgrade vs. full vs. OEM full). The Product Key's are specific to
the type of installation media (retail/OEM), but are not contained in the
media itself.
