Windows XP CDROM Volume Label Not Updating

On a fresh boot, windows xp will update the label for the
first cd put in a drive. After that, that label and size
information via the properties window is static and will
not change no matter how many times i push refresh, close
the window and change cds!

This is obviously a bug and I dont uderstand why
Microsoft will not address it and at lease have something
in their Knowledge base addressing the issue.

Is there a work around? Is their a patch available? When
will a patch be available?

It's a bug when it affects everyone, not when it affects some with certain
hardware/software configurations. I, myself, have never seen this with
"current/newer" CD drives. Only with CD drives that are 3-5 years old, and
they are overdue for a change.

Please run the script file that can be downloaded from the following web
site

http://tinyurl.com/1q0y

The name of the file is xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

Double click the file and you may be required to restart the system.

Best of luck,

I don't think that is the file he needs. according to his post, he's
not having trouble seeing the CD drive. The problems is that the volume
lable of the cd in the drive is not being updated in explorer when he
changes CD's in the drive. The files and everything else show up
correctly, but has the volume label of the first cd put in the drive
after WinXP starts.

I have that same problem on my system here

Daniel,

Every time a disk is inserted in the drive, the information about the disk
is updated in the registry (includning the volume labels)
The patch removes unnecessary registry entries for theCD / CD-RW and DVD
drives.

Also, check by disabling autoinsert notification for the drive that has the
problem.

Disabling autostart for my CD drives is one of the first things I do
after installing. I tried running that script, and I still have the
problem of the volume label not getting updated when I change CD's. All
the other information about the CD gets updated, just not the volume
label in Explorer.

Microsoft has a Knowledge Base article (817357)on this a
http://tinyurl.com/2tosx . Unfortunately, you have to contact them fo
the fix. I am having the same problem and I have not tried Microsoft'
fix yet, but I found your posting in my search so I thought I'd pos
the link to the article here, too, since it seems like several peopl
are having the same problem.

The problem was evidently introduced with the patch entitled "The "Sho
for music online" link starts Internet Explorer instead of your defaul
Web browser in Windows XP" , KB833998. I took the version o
shell32.dll from prior to this patch (6.0.2800.1233) and dropped it i
system32 and system32\dllcache directories, rebooted, and my CD/DV
drives now display the volume label again.
I really don't care about the "Shop for music online" link.
I hope this helps.
