What does one do when they find out that the CD which has
Windows XP on it is damaged? They try to reinstall Windows
XP when it crashes, after the crash. The restore functions
do not help. This, they feel, is because they downloaded
some program and find the Windows XP operating system will
no longer work. You have paid for a full Windows XP
system at $164.85 before the taxes after tax cost is
$188.75 They phone the Microsoft help line, which is in
Ontario, from BC at their own cost. They speak with a
representative who tells them Microsoft is not responsible
because the disk has written on it for 'Distribution Only
with A new PC'. (It was purchased for an existing system,
which the seller was aware.) A message was left on the
voice mail, but no responce has been forthcoming.
I would like to ask how can this be because the software
manufacture is Microsoft which is very prominently
displayed on the front of the disk. Where does one go to
with a complaint? The seller does not feel that they're
responsible because the disk was in good shape when it was
sold. Would consider paying for a replacement disk, but
the opinions seem to be that the consumer is out in the
cold - a bit high-handed!
The disk was NOT abused - stored in a jewel case at all
times (bought in a paper envelope with cellophane
window). Only time it was out was when it was in the CD
player (have 2 on the computer system & did not work in
either of them). Previous systems (95, 98 & ME) are STILL
in good working order! Wondering if perhaps the XP disk
may have been slightly 'damaged' from the get go.
Wondering if from your vantage point, there might be
something you might be able to do, or at least warn other
consumers that this can happen and what to do for
themselves - maybe 'wake up' Microsoft!! Thank you for
your co-operation in this matter.
