windows xp browser problem

I have a year old Dell computer installed with windows
xp.A few months ago my computer crashed, after that
nothing would install after I downloaded anything [ not
even the windows update].With alot of work everything is
working pretty well but I am only able to go to a few web
sites on the internet, the rest I get on for a second and
the computer goes back to the desktop everytime.It could
be a stores' web site or a childrens website, anything.
There is no certain type it will or will not go to.

First eliminate any scumware.
