When I boot my computer, a screen appears advising that there is;

checksum error
defaults loaded
press F1 to continue

So I press F1 and the bootup is completed.
How can I get rid of the checksum error so the bootup proceeds without
pausing?
PS What is a checksum
If it is important, why is the machine able to 'work around" a checksum error

I did that and was then asked to insert the original CD of Windows XP service
pack 2.
I did that and was advised it is the wrong disc. It is of course the right
disc, but the dialogue box insists it is the wrong one.
Any ideas.

I don't have any additional service pack installed. The original disc I
bought is:
Microsoft Windows xp Home edition includes service pack 2 Version 2002.

From memory I bought it 12 months ago.
I have the original disc in front of me. And I have the certificate of
authenticity, and the product key which is shown on the certificate.

I bought a genuine copy of the Windows software, just so I could avail
myself of the help available.

But I had trouble with the computer and all the information on the C drive
was lost. Thanks to my kids playing internet games and downloading something.
I suspect that the computer technician who "fixed" it up, did not use my disc
when he fixed it, but a disc of his own.

How can I determine if this happened.
and how can I now fix it?

I can give you a copy of my product key if that will help.

Do not publish your Product Key. Someone could steal your license, and you
would not get any more automatic updates. I suggest looking at the
Add/Remove list, while you have the 'show updates' checkbox checked. It may
list SP3. Another path to checking the SP level would be to go to start run,
and type :
