Windows XP Backup schedule

I scheduled a weekly (M/W/Fr) backup schedule to run at 8:15am each of the
mornings for the days of the week. The backups were pointing to the USB
drive but on Monday, the schedule did not kick off. Is there anything about
the USB drive as a source that could cause this problem?

Microsoft says target locations for backups can be:

Your computer's hard disk. The ideal backup location is a separate
partition from the one you're backing up. If your hard disk is
partitioned into drive C and drive D and your data is on drive C, you
can safely back up to drive D.

A Zip drive or other removable media. At 100-250MB per disk, this is
an option if you don't have multiple gigabytes to back up.
Unfortunately, the Windows Backup utility can't save files directly to
a CD-RW drive.

A shared network drive. You're limited only by the amount of free
space on the network share.

An external hard disk drive. USB and IEEE 1394 or FireWire drives have
dropped in price lately. Consider getting a 40 GB or larger drive and
dedicating it for use as a backup device.
 
Thanks Jose. I found the problem. It does backup to the USB drive. It was
a drive letter mapping problem. I thought I had selected the proper drive
letter but I had not. Once I redirected it to the proper drive, it worked
fine.

If you created the backup job from within the XP Backup Wizard, it
creates a Scheduled Task for the job that gets kicked off by the Task
Scheduler service.

There is a log file - c:\windows\schedlgu.txt that keeps track of ST
happenings. The log can get cluttered making troubleshooting
difficult. To restart the log, stop the Task Scheduler Service,
delete (or rename) the log, restart the service then work on your
afflicted task.

Your tasks, statuses and the log can be viewed by browsing to the c:
\windows\tasks folder where you can view the log by clicking the
Advanced drop down to see any issues (or you can just look the
schedlgu.txt file with a text editor).

You can also right click the task and adjust the Properties, run it
right now to test it and observe the columns of information then look
at the log and see what is going on with your task.
