Windows XP backup question

I recently started using the backup utility that comes with Windows XP home
edition. I have it set up to backup my files to a second hard drive. However,
when I check the backup file that is being created, it is only 5700 KB in
size. The documents that I am backing up are over 30 GB in size. Can the
backup program really compress my files that much, or am I somehow not
backing up everything I think I am? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

No, the backup utility cannot compress then that much.
basically XP backup is about the worst possible choice for backing up.

The simple thing to do is merely copy the files you need to backup...
to another harddrive
