I would like to have a defined backup procedure as an icon on the Desktop. I
do not see where Windows backup saves any such specification set that I might
point to. Any help?
Ron

The Windows Backup program is so limited in function that you may wish to
give serious consideration to third party software.

I'm just trying to keep it simple for a friend. I use Ghost...

There are many backup apps, most of which have options to set a schedule,
not just by time but on shutdown or reboot

Ron,

In Windows Backup, I believe you can save the fileset you have chosen to
back up as a file - click "file, save". (I'm going by memory, now).

Then just put the file in your desktop folder (or better, put it in your My
Documents folder and create a shortcut to it on your desktop).

Ron,

You can do this using a link to a batch file on the desktop. The batch file
runs NtBackup with command switches that specify what to backup or a
pre-defined .bks file that you have previously created with the NtBackup GUI.
You can find examples for doing this in the NtBackup help file by clicking on
the Index tab and then typing in "batch files".

I guess the issue is that the Windows Backup program is not simple to use
nor is it very effective for the average home user. There are plenty of free
solutions that are very easy to use and can readily be scheduled. My
personal preference is Acronis TrueImage. Easy to use and very effective.

Damned if I can get the machine to accept a question - all I get is a
'bleep' noise from it. May I try to ask a question here?

Why is it that I can no longer make back up copies of WP files to a DVD+RAM
disk?
The machine tells me 'Files are Read Only'. Is there a simple solution to
this?

With very many thanks,
James. (In Toronto, June 2nd. 2007)

You need third party software to write to DVD. Windows XP has no native
ability to write to DVD as it can to CD-R
