Hello,
I really need help. So if you have a solution give me a
response. I had windows ME home on my computer. I am a
Computer science major and my school allow us to get free
copies of Windows XP professional version. I need Windows
XP so that I can run Visual basic.net. After I installed
Windows XP, I can no longer connect to the internet. It's
saids that the modem is unavailabe. Modem Unavailable
device (COM1) What can I do?

Go to the web site for the maker of your modem, download and install the
proper XP driver.

I would hope that, as a computer science major and college student,
you would have heard of these things for hardware called "drivers." I
also would hope that you know that a driver for one OS probably won't
work on another OS, especially when moving from a DOS based OS to a
non-based one.

Get the right driver for your modem.

Do you know what sort of modem you have?

If it's an old ISA modem, you may have to install it manually. I believe
that XP won't automatically detect ISA modems, even if they are of the
plug-and-play ISA type.

XP Help tells you how to manually install a modem, once you obtain suitable
drivers. (You may also be able to use the generic modem drivers included
with XP. I have done that in the past.)

Failing that, you may wish to consider getting a cheap PCI Windows Modem. I
preferred hardware modems myself, but I expect that the CPU utilization by a
winmodem on any system capable of running XP well ought to be negligible. (I
use the past tense because I've been on a cable modem for a couple of
years.)

Good luck.
