I'm trying to network a laptop with Windows 2000 and a Desktop with XP. I created a workgroup and connected the 2 computers into a hub only. All I want to do is have the 2 computers share files.

I can have the windows 2000 computer ping and recieve a reply from the XP computer, but I cannot see the XP machine in the 2000's workgroup.

I also cannot ping and receive a reply from the windows 2000 computer when using the XP computer, but I can see the windows 2000 computer in the XP's workgroup. When I click on the Windows 2000 computer in the XP's workgroup I get a message saying that the W2K computeris inaccessable, you may not have administrative privliges to access this computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated towards getting these computers to talk together.

Thank you,
Charles

Hi,

Firstly have you made a user on your 2k machine with name as the user you
log onto the xp machine as?

Also you will need to actually share a drive/folder on the xp machine for it
to work!

Hi Larry, The users do have the same name for logon. I
believe that the drives are shared.

Any idea why I can't ping the windows 2000 computer from
the XP machine, when I can get a response when the W2K
computer pings the XP?

Thanks,
Charles

Charles,

Are the 2 machines set to obtain ip auto? if so try giving each pc an ip!

Have you turned the built in xp firewall?
