Windows XP after RAM upgrade

I installed a RAM card in my IBM Thinkpad 1200i. I can't
open Windows XP. it says there is a corrupt file (System32
\drivers\pci.sys). I tried to boot from the original CD
and I get an error message that Knowlege base says is bad
or damaged RAM. The computer BIOS Utility recognized the
RAM as good memory. I sent one card back already but two
bad ones in a row I find hard to believe.
I do not know what to do. If I take the card out, it
works fine.
I am a moderately experienced computer user, not a novice
but not a techie either. Can anyone help?

Does the new card work by itself? What I mean is, if you
take out all your RAM, and only put in the new RAM, does
it work?

If so, the old RAM and the new RAM aren't compatible with
each other in your laptop, and you need to check your
documentation or with IBM to see what RAM you need to get.

If it doesn't work by itself, then the new RAM is bad.

It's a laptop and the original memory is permanent. The
card came from Crucial and is exactly what IBM says to
use. The original operating system was Win98 and I
upgraded to Win xp pro so my laptop would match our home
PC. Could this make a difference?

Since WinXP is more hardware intensive, it is very likely the old memory
that works fine for Win9x, fails for WinXP.

Take out the additional RAM and see what happens. Does the problem
correct itself?

That will be the critical test.

Good luck
