I have a windows 98 machine acting as a server. I have
one user with a Windows XP machine. One of these machines
are locking up the other. I SP both PC's. I first
thought it was something to do with the tape drive and
backup but after having the tape out of the drive and
backup not running, it was still happening. There is
nothing giving me an indication what is causing the lock
up. I did a scan reg /fix, that did not work. Has
anyone else had a problem with XP & 98 locking up when in
a Network enviroment? It's XP Pro & 98 SE.

Not quite sure what you mean. Windows 98 *cannot* "act as a server" because
it's not a server OS, therefore it lacks server capabilities. You're
obviously running a peer-to-peer network which, by its very definition,
cannot have a server, as all systems are on the same level...The server has
to be the highest system in the hierarchy.

Server (which
must be running a server operating system e.g. Windows 2000 Server/Adv.
Server or Windows 2003)

System 1 System 2
(which can run a client OS i.e. Windows 9x/ME/2000/XP)

Also, a network with a server really needs more than one client unit, or
it's not worth running a server network!

NO. Win 9X and NT (NT, 2000, and XP based systems will interconnect without
any problems as long as you have set up the network properly.

Are you sure that your network is causing the "lockup"

Have you run the latest antivirus definitions and a malware checker on your
systems? Do you have a firewall installed on any machine that can access
the network? Do you have the latest security patches for BOTH operating
systems?
