windows won't start when plugging in a second harddisk

When I plug in a second hard-disk, windows (XP-pro) will start-up to the
point where i must give the password.
When I enter the password nothing happens anymore.
It is totally stuck!
When I starup in the safe-mode it will work, so the disk is accessable under
Windows.
Master/slave is installed correctly.
On the second disk there are no active partioins (only extended i thenk it
is called).
Has anyone got a clue how to get the second disk started???

Are you 100% sure the jumpers at the rear of the drive are configured
correctly and that both drives show correctly in the BIOS?
