Hi
I am stumped, my system is a soyo mb , with a k-6 3 450+ running at
550 with a voodoo 3 card
the machine has been trouble free, it is now my kids puter and it gets
allot of game play.
It started locking up needing frequent restarts, now it won't finish
loading, it gets stuck at the flag screen, I can get to save mode and
it shows no errors in device manager.
I have reformatted , still no luck , switched hard drive , changed
memory, none of this has helped.
bootlog shows the last entry as esdi_506.pdr no failures shown.
I have tried deleting the Enum folder in the registry (after backing
it up) and that got it past that spot , but as I was reinstalling
everything I installed the ide controller (dual fifo) restarted and I
locked up again in the same spot, one more thing is that my cd player
was not showing up in my controller

You need to do a process of elimination. Since this is an older
computer, check your BIOS battery voltage, normally about 3.0 volts.
Unplug everything that will come out and still allow boot up. No CD, no
floppies, no modem, no sound card, nothing except one hard drive. If
you have onboard sound, disable it in the BIOS. Temporarily install a
different video card. Now does it work? If so, reinstall things one at
a time. If not, temporarily install a different hard drive and do a
clean install of your OS. You say you have tried different memory, so
at this point if it still doesn't work you're down to the CPU, the power
supply or the motherboard. Substitute each, one at a time.

Somewhere along the line you will find the offender.

It sounds like you have a driver problem.
The process of elimination will work here as well.
Unfortunately, you have already wiped the best chance you had of
doing this effectively by reformatting the hard drive. What you can
do now is to check the autoexec.bat and config.sys files and selectively
REMarking out driver load commands. You should look very carefully
at the lines that load the CDROM driver to see if they are ALREADY
REMarked out or have been modified in some way. This often occurs
when aggressive game programs try to set up the machine for installation.

Another possibility is that some game or application can no longer survive
the 100Mhz overclock. Whether it is the machine itself protesting since
overclocking wears out the processor faster, or a program that needs a
steady clock signal (overclocking typically overclocks EVERYTHING
on the system board), you should consider resetting the CPU back to
450Mhz to troubleshoot the problem.
