windows will not shut down

I bought a new computer, everything was fine for about 2
weeks. Now when I shut down it goes through the motions,
gets to the screen where it says "Windows is shutting
down" and it stays there until I push the button in to
turn off the computer. How do I get it to shut off on
its own again?????????? I am running on Windows XP.
