windows will not load

help please

windows 2000 professional gets to the windows is loading
screen and just as it gets to the end of the progress bar
it shuts down. it doesn't fully shut down however and just
seems to go into sleep mode but will not turn back on. the
battery has to be removed (as it is a laptop) to get it
off and then back on again when the same sequence occurs.

any help gratefully accepted

Can you start windows in save mode?

it will start in safe mode. i have tried running a virus
check and reinstalled service pack 4 to no avail.

I've seen this happen when the machine had ACPI disabled
in the BIOS, but windows 2000 was expecting it to be
turned on. Try checking to see if ACPI is enabled.
