Does anyone know if (with the upcoming Vista OS) we will still be forced to
install programs such as Internet Explorer as part of the OS, or will it allow
us the option of using only a browser of our choice?

If not, Linux is beginning to look more and more attractive.
Not sure though if I'm willing and able to take this "big step".

Vista will include IE 7, but you'll be free to
install and use a third-party browser.

Thanks for your prompt response, Carey. Appreciate it.
Guess I didn't phrase my question very well.

I currently run Windows XP, and have tried (I actually did, using third party
software) to remove Internet Explorer from my machine.
I think that in doing so I got more than I bargained for, since apparently IE is
not just an independent part of W XP.
So, I grudgingly re-installed IE.

When Vista cmes out, can I just remove IE without any undesirable side effects -
or better yet, be given the choice not to install it?

Thanks!

Why does it matter? If you don't want to use IE, you can use any other
browser your prefer. Why do you feel it necessary to remove IE (it's part of
the operating system and doesn't remove easily). There are many Windows
components I never use: wordpad, paint, narrator, solitaire, firewall,
backup, defrag etc. I either don't use the function at all, or prefer a
third-party program instead. But I don't feel the need to remove these
functions, either. They use only a small amount of disk space and their
presence, unused, doesn't hurt me in any way.

I know very little about current Vista options, and whatever they may not be
the same in the released version, but my guess it that it will be the same
as it is in XP--you can't remove it without jumping through hoops, and
jumping through those hoops is dangerous. But that's fine with me. I will
either use it or choose an alternative (yet to be determined), but I will
feel no need to remove it. Moreover, I think it's prudent to leave it in
place even it could be removed. You never know when an oddball situation
might arise in which you need it.

You cannot remove IE7 from Vista without causing considerable damage to the
operating system. Just don't use it.

You should take the big step.. rid yourself of IE once and for all..
download and install Suse Linux 10.1 or run Knoppix Live 5.0.1.. there is
absolutely no IE in either of them.. and no WordPad either..

Then you can haunt the Firefox or Konqueror newsgroups.. ask there why you
can't do this and that.. I don't have any problems with MS XP, Vista, IE or
WordPad so will not be joining you any time soon.. hope it all works out for
you..

I'm sure linux may look attractive, but you'll change your tune when you try
to actually use it in every day life, not quite as ready for prime time as
you hear.

Internet Explorer cannot be removed from either Windows XP
or Windows Vista...it is part of the operating system. You must
use IE when visiting the Windows Update web site.

Thanks, folks, for all the advice and opinions!

They have helped me to decide what to do!
