I've read through the Networking group, and no one there seems to have the
problem I am experiencing. Windows desktop with XP, LLDT portocol loaded,
firwal of. Windows Vista laptop, wireless connection through the Linksys
router., Both computers access
the internet very well, but can't see each other at all. The network map on
both machines show that the other machine is present, but that is the only
indication that the other is there at all. I have passwork protected sharing
off, private network, both are set to WORKGROUP, file sharing on on both, but
no response at all. Anyone got a clue?
Don

On each computer, run "net share" command. Post back with the results.

Per your request, on XP Machine (desktop) net share shows:

E$ default shart
IPC$ Remotel IPC
D$ default share
ADMIN$ Remote Admin

On the Vista Machine (laptop)

C$l default share
D$ default share
Shared Doc$ D:\Documents & Settings\All Users\Documents

Vista machine also shows the printers shared on the XP machine
I'm assuming that I should be making something on the desktop public,
but not sure how. But right now, I can ping from Vista to XP2, but not
the reverse. Still puzzled?

Don,

Take a look at logs from "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each
computer, and try and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

the following output from both machines. I wil attach both, but I believe
the problem is on the XP machine, not the right margin comments about
WORKSTATION DOMAIN ??? and 2 SERVERS ???
The problem is that I'm not sure how to fix the problem. My E-Mail is:

Don,

A "server" is any computer running "File and Printer Sharing", which is
generally all computer running Windows. And a "domain" includes workgroups,
which are simply half assed domains. Those terms are normal.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking.html

So you have IPV6 on one computer. That could be a problem, but probably not the
only one.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html

Both computers, in browstat, show
"Browsing is NOT active on domain."
This generally results from NetBT not being Enabled, or a personal firewall
blocking SMBs.

Well I'm apparently not alone in thinking this "Easier to use Vista" bullshit
they sold us is a line of crap! I should not be going bald from pulling my
hair out just to get my brother's new Vista Machine to see my XP machines!

Network: Private
Sharing turned on but unable to share any folders via the Share Tab on the
folder properties, explorer LOCKS UP!!
Password Protection: Off
Can access the internet but can't see XP Machines or be seen by XP Machines.
Network on all machines: WORKGROUP

I feel your pain. I'm glad it's my brother's PC and not mine or I'd have
tossed it out the airlock!
