Have you tried to check "show updates" in Add/Remove? It should be clear to
everyone that the upgrade advisor is 1) a good idea 2) not accurate about
which of your hardware will work in Vista whatsoever 3) Is a decent
suggestion of a trend and along those lines that since Build 5472 Vista
setup run from XP will say that you need drivers for say, and IDE controller
to install on your HD and won't let you run setup from XP but it will work
just fine from a restart from XP. Your drive letters will change as
dictated by the bios but this can be changed not from Disk Management in
Vista but by editing the registry if you want to.
The Upgrade Advisor run on my XP boot told me (pulling the cute little jpeg
I took of it from my XP desktop onto my vistadesktop via the shortcut I keep
on the Vista desktop) 1) My sound card wouldn't work --it has worked in
every single interim build of Vista to date. There are some tricks to
getting it in. So on that Account Upgrade Advisor is DEAD WRONG.
2) Intel Ultra ATA Controller would not work in Vista and not before but in
Vista 5472 and after, it says when you try to run the setup from XP that you
need to install drivers for that controller --copying the new ones won't
work but restar from XP and Vista installs perfectly and runs well as good
as a 5472 Vista can run from MSFT. Lots of things work beautfiully--they
need 6 more months. They have given up and settled on two many bugs. But
the point is that information from the Beta 1.0 current version of the
Upgrade Advisor is also DEAD WRONG.
3) USB VIA Rev 5 Controller from VIA technologies can't run on Vista.
They're talking specifically about the IO memory controller for my Intel
chipset family, having read every convoluted Byzantine article on Intel's
and AGA's site. DEAD WRONG AGAIN MSFT. It does on every build.
Someone is going to say they don't say their info is carved in stone. You
betcha. But then what's the purpose of the upgrade advisor if it adds to the
already intimidations and MSFT strategy to up their OEM preinstall Vista
sales by falsely telling people what you need to work in a Vista computer.
Bottom line is if you have a GB of decent qulity RAM you can make Vista
smoke. The cost of Video Cards now makes it very affordable for people to
get a VC that will run all the graphic changes on the gui in the Aero Glass
and it's sequels club. I don't doubt that if I had 4GB of RAM and Colin's
nice new PC that things might run sweeter. But I have this running with all
the things the Upgrade Advisor can't run. I have every devier from every
device running including with 5472 my scanner that wouldn't run since the
Beta started. I would encourage everyone who can afford the new dual core
processors to be sure and try to include this on your PC--maybe they will
become standard, but they aren't necessary. For people who have them and
enjoy them and can nuance all their aspects, those are fun things to do.
