Fairly regularly I find that Vista automatically shuts my computer down to
install updates. I get no warning message so quite often i'm in the middle
of something and lose my work etc. Can anyone let me know if there's
anything I can do to stop this happening. Thanks

Set Windows Update to only notify you when new updates are available.

Then you will be able to "manage" their download and installation.

You set Windows Update to notify when there are updates, it doesn't do
them automatically, you have to go to the Windows Update site and do
them manually. You can select the ones you want that way and let the
machine boot after they are done, but you have the control using Control
Panel/Security/Windows Update.
