I have windows vista home basic, installed on my laptop and I am having a
problem with the sound recorder. Everytime I open it up, a window pops up
saying, "Windows Sound Recorder is not installed properly. Run REGSVR32
WavDest.Dll." How do i go about fixing this problem?

so i basically entered in the search field when u open up the start button or
th windows icon on windows vista in the bottom left-hand corner, enter the
command and a window opened up saying "The module "WavDest.Dll." was loaded
but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005. For more
information about this problem, search online using the error code as a
search term." So basically i either cannot run it or i don't know what i am
doing.

You have to run it from an "elevated" command prompt:

Type cmd in the Start Search box above the Start Orb. When cmd.exe appears at
the top of the Start Menu, right click it and select "Run as Administrator". In
the Command window type the regsvr32 command and press Enter.

ok so now that this application is workin again, i want to record some music.
i have a microphone and a sound card installed in my motherboard i guess and
i have speakers installed within my laptop. i try recording but it doesn't
record anything. how do i solve this problem?

Are you trying to use the microphone to record your voice? If so, then right
click on the Speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar and select
Recording Devices. In the Recording window, right click and select both "Show
Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices". Click the microphone entry
you want to use and press the Set Default button. Use the Properties button
(the Levels tab will allow you to adjust the recording level) and the Configure
button to set up your microphone.

If you want to use a line in to record, set it as default. If you want to record
a computer sound, set "What-U-Hear" (Creative) or "Stereo Mix" (Realtek), or
something similar as default. NOTE: You can have only ONE recording device (or
playback device) active (default) at the same time, unless your audio adapter's
control panel allows simultaneous recording inputs.

all it shows is the microphone-as the recording device. there is no line-in.
and the computer sound, there is no "What-U-Hear" (Creative) or "Stereo Mix"
(Realtek), or anything similar to that.

What is your audio adapter in Control Panel (Classic view) > Device Manager >
expand Sound, video and game controllers?

Did you right click in the Recording window and select "Show Disconnected
Devices" and "Show Disabled Devices"?

Are your plugs on an add-in audio card or on the computer's case, a portable or
a desktop computer?

well i did the first part of what u said and I have "High definition Audio
Device". i right clicked right click in the Recording window and selected
"Show Disconnected
Devices" and "Show Disabled Devices". And i have a dell inspiron 1501
laptop, so the sound card came with the laptop. it is built in.

Go to the Dell site and download Vista drivers for your audio adapter. Be sure
to get the drivers for your EXACT laptop model, and follow any installation
instructions provided with the download to the letter.

What audio ports does the laptop have? Is there an audio line-in port in
addition to the microphone port?
