Where can a person checks on what the system requirements are to install and
run Windows Vista and what systems the upgrades will work on??

I am runnings Windows 98se now.

TIA

Vista upgrade editions require Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and later. Navigate to
microsoft.com and search on "vista" for all the info you need concerning
hardware requirements for Vista.

Hi

What happens if you are dual booting?

Thus the advisor says HP Scanjet 4300C will not work? Does that
preclude switching to Windows XP for scanning?

The advisor also suggests minor compatibility issues but presumably
these will only arise if the programmes are run with Vista not Windows
XP?

Hi Gerry,

The point of a dual boot is to be able to use things with the system that
are compatible with one OS but not another. If a scanner and its software
are compatible with XP and not Vista, then it should work when booted to XP
and not Vista. Pretty straight forward, really.

The upgrade advisor is useful, but is not 100% correct. It detects known
incompatibilities, and some of these may be resolved by software patches
and/or updated drivers from the manufacturer.

Thanks Rick for the clarification.

It seems that some users are hitting problems with HP scanners having
installed IE7, i.e. even before Vista. My scanner does work with
Windows XP / IE7, which is better than some other users are finding. I
wonder how far HP will go along the road towards updating software if
they see not updating software as a means of generating extra sales of
replacement hardware?

I also spent a frustrating time trying to find out the position
regarding Norton Winfax Pro. I cannot get any information linking
Winfax Pro and Vista. On the UK sales site they do not seems to be
selling Winfax Pro! One search resulted in me being offered Norton
Internet Security and another Norton Ghost. In the end I sent an email
to Symantec querying whether they were still selling Winfax Pro! I
have yet to find out the position regarding updates for Partition
Magic, just purchased, which is said to also have minor
incompatibility issues with Vista.

The problems with PM aren't minor. Don't try to use with Vista partitions.
Winfax Pro hasn't been updated in years and seems no longer sold.

You can try the MS hardware compatibility list at:

https://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx

Search for HP Scanjet 4300C (the 4300 is listed as "unknown")

John

Can you please expand on your remarks regarding Partition Magic? If
the system is dual booting and Partition magic is run using Windows XP
could there be problems?

That link places my Epson Stylus Photo R300 as incompatible and it is
not mentioned by the Vista test.

It might be that the Epson was switched off. I will need to check
that out!

Thanks for your post.

Gerry:
With Vista the NTFS structure is different than XP. Due to this
difference PM will list a complete disk as corrupt if it's formatted using
Vista. Unfortunately PM is another excellent product that was left to
oblivion after it was sold.

I am running VISTA RTM Business dual booted with XP Pro on two
different SATA drives and it's running nicely.

On the topic of scanners, I was more than delighted to have VISTA
recognize my HP Scanjet 5P scsi connected to an Adaptec 19160
controller card (I used to have a bunch of scsi drives and a scsi
Plextor on earlier incarnations of this machine).

However the scanner would not actually work as recognized by VISTA.
Remembering what was needed with W2K I installed the old HP Deskscan
2.9 software (one package before the later one whose name I forget) and
uptodate TWAIN files and the scanner worked fine then under W2K (I
think at one time I had to disable Windows Image Acquisition perhaps
let the TWAIN connection get its act together.

So I checked the HP website and Deskscan 2.9 is still available there
on the SJ5P page so I downloaded and installed it and then ran the
scanner test and sure enough the baloon went up <g> [Those who have run
the test will know about the hot air ballon that floats up the pane to
say the scanner is working OK].

So now I don't have to buy a new scanner and the HP utilities like Copy
Utility and the general scanning work as before in earlier versions of
Windows.

FWIW.

FWIW VISTA would not install until I uninstalled PQ's BootMagic even
though it was not active.

The Upgrade Advisor flags PM8.1 as "might have minor compatibility
issues after upgrading to VISTA" so I've not tried to reinstall it.

Dennis covered nicely. Several posters earlier ran it and reported an error
105. It ask if they wanted to repair, and when they replied yes, they had a
system that had to be reinstalled. I personally haven't tried, but the
version of NTFS is a little different.

Hugh

I have never used Boot Magic, although I appreciate it comes with
Partition Magic. Thanks for the warning.

You're welcome.

I'll mention also that I think -- well I know I did update but not that
it was the cause <g>) I had to update the firmware on one of my Plextor
DVDRW SATA drives to avoid getting a message at the beginning of
Installation that it could not find bootmgr (the VISTA file?) when
booting from the DVD nor could it find ntdlr when booting from within
XP which I tried to find out where the problem was.

Plextor did have a firmware update for the drive that included VISTA
compatibility in its description.
