Hello Knowledgebank,

I have bought a new pc and i am trying the Windows VISTA on my machine.
My machine is AMD Athelon 3500+ 64bit and 1GB RAM.
It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to login to windows.

Is this an expected behaviour or is something wrong ?

Thanks

With my 5 years old PC rates 1.0, the login is instantaneous.

No, that's not normal. By "login", are you talking about from the password
screen to desktop? Just wanting to make sure. :)

Here's a few things that I'd check:

1. Does it take as long in safe mode as it does in normal mode?
2. In your Event Log (start > run > eventvwr), under System or Application,
do you see any errors? (red (x)'s)

Hello David,

Thanks a ton for your reply.
It takes time to bring me the login screen for me to enter the password.
It takes the same time to boot in safe mode also.
Here are some errors in Application (start->run->eventvwr)

halted by the client or the connection with the client failed.

Spent a bit trying to find any type of useful response for you.

My assumptions:

- You're on RC1 and are using the x86 version.
- As you said new pc, that this is a fresh install.

The real stumper is that this is occuring in safe mode too... leveling out
most of the more troublesome drivers like video resolution and sound. The
application errors you provided, I assume that these occur shortly after
bootup? Are there any system errors to match?

MSN Messenger, Windows Mail, and Internet Explorer... perhaps these are faulting
out due to a service not properly starting... but I'm curious if these are
actually occuring pre or post login. To my knowledge MSN Messenger and Windows
Mail do not have any services that start up pre-login.

The COM+ event failure usually isn't a big deal unless you have COM+ objects
loaded that are expecting it. Some information, though dated as XP SP2,
can be found at http://www.theeldergeek.com/com+_event_system.htm. When
you're logged in, if you go to Start > Run > services.msc. If you see the
COM+ Event System Service, it should be set to Manual and Started by installation
default. Perhaps something to verify.

After you get logged in, do you experience any other application errors or
faults?

And, as always, have you tried the latest build and a clean install? If
I assumed wrong and this is an upgrade, perhaps there is an application with
an extremely long time-out that is failing on startup. Your system log might
shed some light there.

Beyond that, unfortunately, we're getting a bit out of my scope. I'd suggest
taking your errors and using the feedback tool and reporting the application
faults and issues... just incase :).

I also had significant logon and powerdown waits - seems to be resolved with
the 5728 build vs. the 5600 (though my install was an upgrade vs. a fresh
install)
