Windows Vista performance

Hi,

Fist here is my system:
Athlon64 3200, 1gb ram
1 SATA Raptor (1000RPM) 36Gb used for system installation
2 SATA (1x160, 1x 250)
2 ATA (1x200, 1x40)
Screen ACER 17" TFT
Geforce 6600 GT

my VISTA Test:
buned the 2 dvd (32 bit & 64 bits). None of them managed to finish setup
properly (tried and sucessfull on another system so DVDs are fine)
using a (sic) linux loader I managed to get access and boot Vista.
Windows was very slow and I had a very annoying black screen for about 1/2
second when receiving security warnings. Though it as due to the display
driver.
I installed the required Nvidia driver, rebooted.
Overall the system is running better with no more delay for the security
warning.
I noticed that it was already downloading an update so I selected shutdown
and install updates (as I had to go). Very weird display at this point. I
had the nice aero glass desktop screen with message, "do not power off " with
a lot of cryptic text (I presume some comments on the updates going on but
couldn't read). Once finished Vista shutdown expectedly.
I like the new nice look, the popup effect when opening programs...
everything seems a lot nicer and more thought and more user friendly (except
the annoying security warning), all nice and all.
The only ONE thing that annoyed most of all is that aero is supposed to take
advantage of the graphic card to managed the display.... what I see is that
it takes up to 10% CPU (yes CPU not GPU) just to move a window about ??? Am
I missing something here ? is there some hidden tweaking to be done to have
aero behave the way it should ?
Plus the overall system is about twice as slow as the same system under XP.
This is already one of the reasons I chose to wipe my XP and install Vista on
the Raptor...

Just for the sake of testing, I installed one linux equivalent to vista :
OpenSuse 10.1 featuring the Xgl feature. appart for the necessary manual
configuration to have Xgl working (for those who know, Xgl is the linux
pendant of the Aero glass (or should I note it the other way around ??)).
This system works like lightning compared to Aero, I've never seen my system
run so smoothly. Plus Vista could really take benefit at watching what Xgl
does, you can see windows wobbling aroung when moving them, make them
transparent in a breeze, the task swithing shows "live" thumbnail of the
application...
Oh! and of course, CPU never went higher than 1%, and that was when opening
Openoffice... didn't move at all when playing with the windows...

I think I will simply revert to XP until Vista is a little optimized. Take
a real look at Xgl and what it can do... there is still some months to tweak
Vista up to its promises... until then...

Have you reported your results to feedback?

Also this is a Beta. Code is not only not optimised, but there is a lot of
debug code.

If this is your main system, you should restore it to XP. Until at least
the first release. RC1 will still be test code. I'm not going to install
it on my wife's machine until SP1 is out.

.... and that may beat Vista RTM the way things are going...


I'm not going to install
it on my wife's machine until SP1 is out.
 
I'd love to feedback to microsoft but where ?
And I just hope that by the time they release the full version they will
have it optimized... as for now ... well I am currently restoring my main
machine (I had to do it on that one as the spec are quite high compared to my
other systems (pIII 700 and AMD 1700 so ...)

We will see...
 
On the Vista desktop, there is a blue, circular icon called, coincidently,
"feedback." Have you tried that one?


I'd love to feedback to microsoft but where ?
 
Great, I'll do that...

I will reinstall Vista on another partition and keep the XP one so that I
still can do my work and take part to the test...

I've seen a demo video of the XGL. The wobbling windows are neat, but a lot
of people would think the wobbling windows would be way too much; several
people I know already think Aero Glass is overkill. (I like it though.) I
went back to my XP partition for a few hours yesterday, and I actually was
stunned at how quick I could do things in XP because after using Vista for
awhile I almost forgot how much faster XP is.
 
Code optimization will change all of that.

Thats a known issue... Vista beta 2 is a dog. But MS knows that.
What they are loking for is big report.

They had to sacrifice allot to be able to ship a beta in mid 2006 ....

Vista is just killing this system performance :(

But good news. it respond faster then I can type in wordpad... beside that,
its wait, wait wait...

MS, dont take a vacation this summer, fix this... way to many people payed
high $ for your OS
to this this a total failure.

I have a Gateway P4-2 gigahertz processor with 768 megs of RAM and Vista runs very nicely on it. Not as fast as XP, but this is only a beta and I would have to say it is about 95% as fast as XP.

Good for you. but if you haven't noticed, many people with tricked out
machine
are reporting slugish performance (even with all the buggy services
disabled)...
I hope MS dont think like you and actually is working on all those
performance issue
so many of us are reporting.

1) How do you think Vista was finaced with ?
2) The beta you are using is a beta, you will not get a free copy of Vista.

I'm not exactly sure what a "tricked out" machine is but for us less
fortunate (?) Vista is adequate for a Beta OS. Drivers are a hit and miss
operation for sure but this is to be expected. Also there does seem to be
many more services running - some for unknown reasons. However, I don't feel
that this puts it in the category excessively buggy or overly slow. While
it doesn't fly on my system it runs quite well considering its beta status.

Another thought... running 1GB or RAM in this age of software gluttiney is
possibly a bit conservative. I won't build a customer machine today without
at least 2GB of dual channel memory and for some recommend even more. YMMV

Vista seems to run pretty well for me, considering it is a Beta, even on a
relatively low-end laptop, 1.5 GHz Celeron M with 1 GB memory. At first
performance was slow, mainly because I installed over an existing XP
installation. After going to msconfig (hit window key and r together and
type msconfig in the dialog), and disabling the unnessary memory-resident
startup programs, performance increased substantially.

One program called FreeRAMXP Pro, was having a major conflict with Vista,
and causing disk paging (i.e. virtual memory) to kick in long before it
should have. I still get a lot of hard-disk drive activity when I don't
expect it (probably some background indexing), but it doesn't bog down the
system like it did with that program.

All in all, it looks like a promising upgrade to the Windows OS, with a lot
of useful new features and a nice new look. The automatic upgrades seem to
be quickly getting rid of a lot of bugs that I had early on (lot of run
DLLasAPP failures and Windows Explorer failures).

I look forward to the release candidates, with optimized and debug pointer
free code, coming out to see how Vista really runs.
