How do I make sure that Windows Mail program does not open automatically
and
to require a password?

Open Windows Mail.

Click on the "Tools" menu, choose "Accounts". Select your email account,
the click the "Properties" button. Choose the tab that says "Servers". In
the "Password" box, type in your password, then click the box next to
"Remember Password" so that it has a check mark in it. Click, OK, then
Close. Windows Mail will now remember your password.
