Windows Vista Mail .vs. TimeWarner Roadrunner Mail & Saving/Storing Email

I recently setup my Windows Vista Mail to send/receive Email from my Time
Warner Email Account as I was running out of Quota. My question is related
to Saving/Storing Email locally on my PC/Laptop. Does Windows Vista Mail
actually save Email on my local PC/Laptop in a specific File Folder or
remotely on a Windows Vista Server. How do I Save/Store Email locally for
backup/restore purposes ? I may not understand the concepts of POP3 and
IMAP Mail applications.

Using Vista mail, the mail is saved on the machine you are using (in a home
network setup). It can be set to save to a network resource but that is
usually done by your network administrator in a domain/enterprise system
(which probably doesn't use Vista mail anyway).
Vista mail does not have a 'microsoft server' and no information is sent to
or kept by microsoft.


You can select that when mail is fetched from your host mail server that the
mail be removed or left on that server. If you leave it on that server you
will eventualy run out of space there and you will have to go to that site
and delete it. You wlll however be able to look at the mail from other
computers via a web interface. If you elect to have the mail removed then
any mail fetched will be removed after the fetch is complete, the mail will
no longer be available from other computers via the web interface of your
mail host.

Note that if your account is reporting that your mail allocation is full,
you will need to go to that site and delete your mail there, old mail will
not be deleted when new mail is transfered to your local computer via Vista
mail.

Hi, David.

Your ISP's mail server computer stores all your incoming email messages
until your download them. Once you've received your email, the server
deletes them from its storage. Vista Mail receives your messages in your
Inbox on your own computer. Each message is one .eml file in your Inbox
subfolder in your WM Message Store. (To see exactly where this Message
Store is on your hard drive, click Tools | Options | Advanced | Maintenance
| Store Folder.) You should, of course, not leave messages in the Inbox
permanently, but move them into subfolders that you create, with names that
fit YOU (like Family, Friends, DavidPersonal, etc.), from where they won't
be deleted until you choose. WM also uses a few folders of its own
creation, such as the Outbox, Sent Items, etc. These are all on your
computer; the mail server does not know about these.

You can set WM to Leave a copy of your mail on the server after you've
downloaded it. To set this, on a per-account basis, go to Tools | Accounts
| <Time Warner> | Properties | Advanced, and look under Delivery. Just be
aware that lots of family photos - or spam! - can fill up your server's
mailbox very quickly, causing later incoming to be rejected because your
mailbox is full. Then you may need to use webmail to delete some or all of
the overflow.

I had the same problem, but I found that by putting RR in as my favorites, I
can access email, either way. provided by Dell, and as well, by have RR in
favorites,and accessing it that way. hope that helps you. I don't get pop3
either.

POP3 mail is stored on the local computer and usually removed from the
server. IMAP mail is usually stored on the server.
