Installed MS Vista U Beta 2 x64:

Has anyone noticed any problems with their KVM switch and Windows Vista's
power saving mode? If I let the monitor power down, I loose the monitor and
keyboard.

the KVM switch does not know the time of day, let alone which OS you are
using. They do have some video limits, but I have used two of them for years
without troubles. As for your 'sleep' problem, if it is setup correctly the
monitor and keyboard will power down normally. Check your bios as well as
Vista.

I was just mentioning the KVM swtich thing and the video power down seem to
be related. If Vista powers down the video here while connected to the KVM,
it won't wake up - the signal is lost - it usually not a problem with other
OS.

Thanks for the reply, though. I'm not sure how far I want to take this
particular investigation :)

Had the same problem on mine, but did not think the KVM switch had
anything to do with it as its just a load of wiring and a couple of
LEDs. I assumed my "won't wake up" problem was caused by something
related to the ancient keyboard I use on it, or if not something not
worth worrying about. I just fixed the power options to prevent Vista
from sleeping, problem cured.

I've never had a problem with my D-Link 4-port KVM, but then, I generally
turn off all power-saving features (like "Shut off monitor after XXX
minutes") in winblows, just because I usually don't need them.

I'm having this problem with Vista RTM and a Cables To Go KVM which works
just fine with two XP machines. I tried setting sleep and power down settings
off and still have the problem.

I suspect that the monitor detection is working too well. When I switch
away, Vista behaves like I just unplugged the monitor :on a laptop it
switches to the internal screen and on a desktop it switches the display off.
Then I suspect the system is going into powersave correctly and switches to
the logon screen (user locked). From this mode, the system does not appear
to be able to detect when the monitor is back (presume it needs to be in user
mode to do that).

You can test this by switching kvm away for a few minutes then switching
back - the screen bumps around. switch away for longer than your powersave
timeout and it will not come back at all. The "secret" is getting out of
standby/sleep then being able to log on without seeing the screen to get back
into user mode - if I do this, the screen appears after a few seconds.

Just a guess.

Mark.
