I couldn't find anything on the earlier versions of windows I:E Windows 98
and all of it's revisions although I have downloaded the upgrades offered by
Windows. The gist of all of that is that I think that I now have, in
essence, Win 98 ME. Here's my problem, I am trying to clean up the hard
drive to improve performance and have tried using defrag. I got an error
message saying that there were damaged files on the drive and I would have
to run scandisk first. Well I tried that several times and only got a little
more than halfway through. I did however get a message that the scandisk was
being interrupted by Windows trying to open one or more applications. NO
other programs were running. I even tried this with the cable modem turned
off to no avail. HELP!!!! What do I do now, or should I do nothing? Not to
be a cheapskate, but I don't really fancy the idea of shelling out another
$100 or more for another version of windows.

Not exactly sure what you want to do. But if all you want to do is defrag then do it in Safe Mode. Or use msconfig in Normal Boot to disable all the unneccesary items on boot and then defrag. Start | Run | msconfig | OK | General | Selective Startup | Uncheck Load Startup Items | Reboot | defrag | msconfig return to normal | Reboot.

It's always best to run scandisk and defrag in safe mode.
