I purchaced a compaq with a version of windows me on it 2
years ago and want to upgrade to xp home. but i have
bought a upgrade motherbord and all the drivers for the
compaq motherboard are on the cd and are no longer needed.
is the any way i can use the xp upgrade disk to upgrade or
do i have too buy the retail version of xp?

Hi,

To use the upgrade disk, you must have a qualifying media or existing
installation. This can either be a preinstalled qualifying operating system
(meaning it exists on the hard drive) or a regular or generic oem
installation CD for Win95, 98, or ME (though the 95 disk will only qualify
for a clean install, not an upgrade to the existing system). A system
recovery disk for a preinstalled system, such as those supplied by compaq or
HP, cannot be used for this as they are in an image format proprietary to
those systems and are not recognizable by the WinXP upgrade check. They need
to be installed first before the WinXP Home upgrade will recognize it.
Otherwise, if you cannot supply one of these qualifying media disks, you
will need the full retail version.
