Just wondering why anyone would turn OFF the Windows automatic updates? The
update options give the user that choice and I just don't see why anyone
would choose that. Isnt the whole idea of automatic updates to keep your PC
up to date with important Microsoft information? Thanks in advance....

I have a friend who has no broadband available, and his best dialup
speed is 26k (had to pay the phone company to bring a line to his
property - it's that far out in the boonies).

He has updates OFF. When I visit him, I bring updates with me.

That's just one of many possible reasons.

Sometimes they have bugs and render your computer unusable. You'll see...

Over 7 years with XP on two machines and 1 year with Vista on this
one... have YET to have an update cause me a problem.

You'll see too. One bad update and your whole viewpoint will change.

If it hasn't happened yet, it's not going to happen.

Besides, I'm backed up so deep and wide that it won't matter if it
does.

Are you $hiiting me? Do you know how many updates MS has issued that
turn out to have implications for a large number of users?

I suppose that's one solution. In the professional systems management
business, we never install an update unless:

1. You NEED the update
2. You have read all the release notes
3. You have waited for other people to install it and listened for the
industry buzz/feedback

The only exception are truly "critical" updates - if it really looks
like an update you should have ASAP, you do steps 1 & 2 then grit your
teeth and install it.

Hi guys, how about a little rephrasing:

Some systems have an adverse effect to some updates.

The problem being "some" is an undefined and ever changing qualifier.

I don't like Windows rebooting unexpectedly, so I tell Windows to ask me
nicely for permission to update.
