I receive updates from time to time, some include a "Malicious
Software Removal Tool".

In past, XP installs the upgrade and the tool, then requests reboot.
Nothing has ever happed, Windows just restarts normally with no
messages or any orther noticeble changes.

Does the tool run itself, or am I supposed to run it somehow?

Also, there are a bunch of left over folders in from previous
downloads, with names such as:

C:\windows\$NtUninstallKB896428$

Some of them date from 2005; can those old folders be deleted
now?

Thanks!

The $NT... folders are the restore backups when updates were installed.
They are messy yes, and very numerous, but they don't take up much
space, or shouldn't if you have drive space like a 250 gig HD. If
you're running a 20gig drive, I can see a point maybe.
If you delete them you will not be able to remove any of the updates.
If you feel confident that your system is running fine, and has been
since 2005 then I would go as far as to back them up on CD and then
remove them. Just the $NT folders though.

I read up on the Malicious tool one day and it seems to imply that IF it
finds anything it will notify you. That's my understanding.

kram,

The Malicious Software Removal Tool will automatically run during the boot-up,
that is required after the update. It
may make the boot-up sequence appear to run slower, or not.
