Windows Updates

I have a pc with Windows XP Pro that refuses to allow me
to do Windows updates. I am using IE 6 and every time I
try to access the Update site it tells me "Your current
security settings prohibit running activex controls on
this page. As a result the page may not display
correctly." I then click on okay and the message goes
away. Then inside the browser window it comes up and
says "Administrators only"! I have clicked on the link
for troubleshooting and did everything that is suggested
but I still cannot access any updates. I had McAfee
Internet Security loaded at one point and am wondering if
it made a change to a security setting somewhere that I
am not finding.

Initially, make sure that the user's domain account is a member of the machine administrator's group. If you are using your domain credentials, make sure that your account is a member of Domain Administrators. If using the local machine administrator account, make sure that it is a member of the machine administrators group, then proceed from that point. You may also have to enter the update site URL into the appropriate security list within IE. Hope this gets you started

I am set up as a member of the administrator group on the
local machine. I have also listed the URL as a trusted
site and it didn't work.

Thanks in advance!

I don't use McAfee, but I do use Zone Alarm, so I know that Zone Alarm has
an option to block ActiveX controls from downloading. Maybe McAfee has an
option like that. When you click OK to make to message go away, I don't
think the required ActiveX controls will start working OK, when the error
message that just disappeared said

"Your current security settings Prohibit running ActiveX controls on this
page. As a result the page may Not display correctly."

There are also options in Internet Explorer Security Settings dialog box
(click Custom button on the Security tab) that will block ActiveX controls
from downloading (Download signed ActiveX controls), and/or stop ActiveX
controls from running (Run ActiveX controls). If these are set to Disable,
then the page might Not display or run correctly.

Hi JW, I think my problem may be that McAfee has been
removed but it left a lot of remnants. Do you know of a
tool that will go out and clean up the mess it left
behind? I have enabled everything I can see in IE that
refers to ActiveX but still have had no luck in
correcting the problem.

Thanks for your input.

Can you double-check that the account you are using is in the
Administrator's group. Use Computer Management (in Control Panel > Admin
Tools) to check group membership (double-click Groups under Users and
Groups). It is possible to have an account named Administrator that is Not
in the Administrator's group. I get the same error message (Administrators
only) when I run Windows Update from an account in the Users group.

When you "use IE 6" to access Windows Update, how do you launch IE 6 ? Do
you select IE 6 from the Start Menu ? If so, what URL (web address) to you
type in ? Or do you select Windows Update from the Start Menu ? If so,
what URL do you see in the Address bar ?

I checked the groups in Computer Management and I
actually have all the accounts set up as administrators.

If I go to start, IE6 and then from within IE6 I go to
Tools then Windows Update and it takes me to this link,
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

If I go to Windows Update on the start menu it prompts me
to run as and I pick a member that I know is an
Administrator, and it takes me to this link,
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
which is the same.

Thanks for your input!

After much research with exactly the same problem we have resolved using the following. Do a seach in the knowledge base with: you cannot gain access to the Windows Update Web page, you will find PSS ID number 836987. Follow the resolution and your problem will be solved. Good luck!
