OS is XP Home. Can go to windows update page. Everything
goes fine until I click on download updates, then IE
apparently freezes up. I have seen several posts for this
with no answer back to problem. Don't know if I should be
posting this elsewhere, if that is the case please direct
me to the proper newsgroup. Since the windows update
newsgroup is unavailable I cannot post there.

I had a similar problem and am still investigating.

What I did was right click at the bottom and brought up
Task manager. In there under process there was
iserver.exe This was sapping all my CPU and stopped me
from doing very much on the net. I ended the process and
all is OK . I just have to stop the process running
each time I go on the net. Apart from that i have no idea

Do you get an error message at all?

Try going to these pages and looking at some of the
fixes...Try them, one of them might be the fix. Also, if
you are on a network, firewall settings can mess up
Windows Update. Some programs that allow you to "secure
browse" can inhibit accessing Windows update.

The site updatexp.com is free and it offers a newsletter
for XP fixes and such.

Good luck...let me know via post if this works.
