I am I Technology Support Analyst so I support a large a
group of computers and I have been having trouble with
some of the latest updates freezingboth on 2000/XP.
update.exe it start using 100% of the CPU and does not
stop so to get the machine to go to the next update you
have to end task on update.exe. I have even downloaded
the updates locally then installed them still no luck. I
have seen alot of peope have the same problem but I have
yet to see an answer to what is causing this problem. if
anyone know how to contact Microsoft without paying them
to help you please let me know.

The only thing I can think of that might be causing this
problem is I use SANS security Templates has anyone else
discovered this to be the underlying problem?

Have you tried running a script that maps the drive and
runs the patches directly from the server? I got them to
work by running them directly from the server using our
Altiris Deployment Server, with /u /z switches. I think
that's pretty much what it does though. Before that I had
the same problem though, (specifically with KB828026,
KB826232, and KB828035.) I had tried running them
locally, using all the various switches, I even tried
extracting a newer patch and using its update.exe, but
that didn't work eiter. They would just get hung at
update.exe, which is a common problem in this forum.
Anyway, hope that helps.
