Francisco

I have Windows XP Home Edition installed in a Compaq
Presario. I downloaded the SP1 from the Microsoft site on
08/12/03, installed it "successfully", but when I
restarted it the system said that there had been a problem
with the installation. I tried to restart it using
Normal, Safe Mode, Last known good configuration and none
worked. It also said that the boot.ini was not valid, so
as recommended by the Support page, I restarted the
computer with the Windows XP CD, ran bootcfg and that
message did not appear again but still the OS did not
work. I also ran chkdsk /r twice, it said that it had
found and fixed some files, but nothing. I decided to
reinstall XP, it gave me the option to fix the previous
installation, it started to copy some files and to install
them but after a while the system rebooted. After that,
everytime I try, it says "Setup is being restarted" and
starts the installation again and the system keeps
rebooting. If I take off the CD it asks me to put it back
or to get the files from another location. The computer
was working perfectly before, never a virus or a problem
with the hard disk. Is the restore option the only thing
I can do? I hope not.

Thanks.

Francisco, It doesn't look good that you stuck in the installation loop. You
may wish to repost this under a new thread to see if you get a response from
someone with a better idea than reinstalling.
If necessary you can download the installation file for floppies so that you
can reinstall Windows anew. The floppies will get you out of the loop and
enable a new installation.

Good luck, I hope you don't have to go to this extreme.
