Hello Ken,
The first step is to post your problem into the MS Windows Update newsgroup.
That is where Microsoft W U team is actively looking for these update problems.

Be sure you use Outlook Express or a newsreader.
Here's the direct link for Outlook Express news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate
The link for other NNTP newsreader nntp://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Please provide sufficient details on your problem. Include also your version of Windows (here we know it's XP) and the specific update number. Most important is what error message you saw on-screen, at what point. And also the Error notation from the update log file.
You need to find & "isolate" the section of the log for that "fail date".
Use Windows' Notepad to open this log:
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (for Win XP & Win98/Me)

Having found the "error" , then do a "search" on this MS page. See MS Windows Update Troubleshooter
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Thanks for cross posting my quire and also directing me to this Newsgroup.
I will have more specific postings on this group in the near future.
