I have an xp sp2 box with "Notify me but don't automatically download
or install them" options selected for automatic update it only has
dialup (possibly on a noisy line so its very slow).. its a clean
install and it has an svchost error that is causing it to reboot when
msn messenger is running I have read that an update should fix it,
anyways, the updates are available balloon never shows up, even when
its been connected for 20-30 minutes so I am wondering is there a way
to manually initiate the process, I dont want to do it over the web
because it doesnt let you choose what not to install.

does it still run on port 80/443 when running from the desktop as
opposed to from the website?

Suggest you download and save :

Windows Update Agent 3.0 For XP and Vista (32 bit)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Update for Windows XP (KB927891)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CD-A0B9-497E-8A89-404327772E5A&displaylang=en

Close the browser and any other open programs
Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe first, then install
WindowsXP-KB927891-v3-x86-ENU.exe
Restart the system

Beter now ?

ok thats probably not too useful as the update I am trying to prevent
from getting on the system is ms genuine and that download requires
it. I am running a linux box so I was not able to be validated :+(

supposedly you can unselect what updates to install when they are
listed on the windows update page but I dont see anywhere to unselect
them.. has that feature been removed or have I missed it?

WGA must be installed in order to download updates from WU
The WGA Notification 'application' is NOT a required update
WGA is not required for Security Updates delivered through Automatic Updates

Did you install the Windows Update Agent ?

No, it hasn't been removed.
There's no reason that an XP install can not be Validated on a 'nix box

You can partially mitigate the svchost issue without installing KB927891
by either deleting DataStore.edb [after first stopping the AU service]
located in %windir%\SoftwareDistibution\DataStore, or by attempting to
Defrag, Recover, or Repair it. MS recommends running Recovery prior to
attempting to Repair databases -

esentutl /d %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\datastore.edb

[This command defragments the DataStore.edb]

esentutl /r %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\datastore.edb

[This command performs recovery, bringing all databases to a
consistent state]

esentutl /p %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Datastore\datastore.edb

[ This command attempts to repair the damaged database ]

NOTE: Deleting DataStore.edb WILL also delete the updating History that
one sees at WU

In XP HE one must first stop the Automatic Updates service prior to
running esentutl commands
If a backup image was created prior to running the commands, then a
reimage should be made done after running them.
