Is there a problem with the Windows update site or is it just me that can't
get into the site? Automatic updates give me the update for windows defender
but it doesn't install correctly.
Otherwise I get that silly error message that the help page does nothing to
resolve. Would like to know for my own information.

Thanks,

It's Only Me. rfeally.

Works fine for me. More details on the "silly error message" might be helpful.

Sorry I have no information on "silly error message". If you would like to
be more specific then perhaps someone can assist or in the alternative, post
to error message to the Windows Update Newsgroup.

Hi Its Only You
Some have been saying don't download Defender - some say its better than
beta1. As the beta1 is still being updated on a regular basis, Im staying
with it. Defender is also beta, still in test stage.
If you search Defender in the groups(Basic, General, Newusers), you will get
a good cross-section of posts.

I have followed the steps to add the addresses to my trusted sites but
still get the above error when I go to the windows update site.

The problem is not defender, it's the actual windows update site. It for
some reason, will not allow me in. It checks the active x and quickly jumps
to the error page. I'm wondering if there is a possibility that I have
somehow disabled something that would allow access to the site again. All
the necessary services are running correctly.

Do you have a firewall installed on the computer? Try turning it off
temporarily and see if that resolves the issue.

Also the "trusted sites" entries should include all of the following:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

Note that the KB article does not have two "v5" sites on its list.

Good luck

An error occurs when Windows Update is unable to download and install the
Windows Update ActiveX component.
Can also be caused when a firewall blocks the download of the component.

Try adding the following sites to the IE Trusted Sites zone

http://update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Also check for the presence of malware on the system. Go here to have it
scanned :

For ZoneAlarm, go into the privacy tab and add update.microsoft.com under
the site list tab and enable mobile codes for only this one.
This will allow Active X to be run, which is required for Windows Update to
run successfully.

I fixed it!! Nothing suggested seemed to work. I kept at it and figured it
out finally! I use
ZoneAlarm Security Suite 2006 for anti-virus/anti-spyware protection. I
opened the application main menu and clicked 'Privacy' on left menu. On the
upper right there are 3 Tabs named Main, Site List & Cache Cleaner. Click on
Main tab and go down to 3rd option at bottom of window called Mobile Code
Control. Click 'Custom' button. In 'Custom Privacy Settings' window click
tab called 'Mobile Code'.
Click button named 'Reset to Default'. Click 'Apply' then 'OK'. That should
do it. The ActiveX embedded objects had been blocked causing Windows Update
to be blocked as a result. Hope this helps anyone who needs it. If using
other security software check the settings to be sure this isn't what is
preventing updates from running.
Good luck!!

Thankyou a million times, TaurArian. That was the problem, ZONEALARM pro and
it's settings.

Once again, THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!! It is very much appreciated.
