I recieved some updates which I installed and now I seem to notice that the
start up speed is slower. Am I getting paranoid, or could this really be so?
Right now I feel i just want to throw the stupid program out. Would that be a
bad idea? I'm not really into the computer race, getting all these bigger and
better computers - I'm quite happy as it is. What do we need all this stuff
for anyway?!

Can someone give me some general guidelines?

You are getting paranoid. Most of the updates these days fix various
security related issues, and this is what Windows of all kinds needs and
deserves.
Security updates may slow down the computer a little bit because so many of
the shortcuts the programmers took emphasized speed over security.
I might have done so myself if I knew that my next raised depended on me
getting my code to execute as fast as possible.

Installing Windows Updates can be a significant system change.

Try Start, All Programmes, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Delete all
but the most recent Restore Point ( Start, Programs, Accessories, System
Tools, Disk Cleanup, More options). Run Disk Defragmenter by selecting
Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

How much RAM memory? Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring Task Manager and
select the Performance Tab. What is the Total, the Commit Charge and the
Peak?

How large is your hard drive? Is it partitioned? How much free space on
each drive / partition. How is the drive formatted -FAT32 or NTFS. To
get this information whilst in Windows Explorer place the cursor oneach
drive in turn, right click and select Properties.

What is your CPU speed?
