Hello

I have a small Active Directory domain with about 10 pcs on the network, all
of which refuse to follow my simply rules of running Windows Update weekly.

Is there a way with a policy or otherwise to force a windows update and
installation of the downloads? Also can they be downloaded to a central
location rather than 10 times via our slow connection?

THanks very much

Jon

Use AD group policy. In Computer Settings, right click on
Administrative Templates and select Add/Remove Templates.
Then add the wuau.adm template to this policy. Once it's
added, go to Windows Components-Windows Update and
configure whatever settings you want. Works like a charm.

Group policy??

.
Right click the OU, select Properties, select the Group
Policy tab.
Edit the specific group policy, expand Computer
Configuration, expand Administrative Templates. You can
right-click on Administrative Templates and
select "Add/Remove Template". Browse to the wuau.adm file
and select it.
This will add the Windows Update policy template to the
group policy.
Then you can configure the settings for WindowsUpdate and
apply it to the machines.

Dave,

I think that SUS might be the solution. I will admit
that I am not familiar with the wuau.adm template so I
can not really speak to that. However, I will
investigate it.

I think that Jon's requirement for downloading it once
rather than 10 times might make SUS the ideal candidate
here.

I agree, SUS will work for him. The wuau.adm template
added to the GPO will also FORCE the updates to take
place. You can direct the workstations to an internal SUS
server using the policy, and then the clients download
using the faster internal connection, while the SUS server
downloads the files just once.
