Windows Update, XP and LinkSys Router Problem

Today I just installed the latest Windows Critical
Updates for my PC. After rebooting my machine, my
LinkSys BEFW11S4 Wireless-B Broadband Router stopped
working. I couldn't even get to the Router configuration
page at http://192.168.1.1. The only way I could access
this configuration page was if I hard coded 192.168.1.100
as the computers IP address instead of obtaining the IP
address automatically. This didn't fix the problem with
the router not accessing the internet however.

I can see packets going in and out and my ISP can see the
MAC address of the Router.

What I have tried:
1) Resetting the Router and reconfiguring the settings
(only possible when I hard code the IP address).
2) Removing the Windows updates I installed today.
3) Doing a system recovery taking me back till yesterday.
4) Rebooting my machine, and turning the router and cable
modem on and off many many times.

Supposedly this is a known problem with LinkSys and
Windows updates, however they are calling this a
Microsoft problem and won't help me restore the
functionality of my router.

Has anyone seen this problem before or have any
suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks,
Jason

Is your machine not getting an IP address from the Router?

Have you verified that DHCP is actually running on the router and have you
enabled router logging? That may have a clue on what is happing from that
perspective.

Is there anything network related in the Windows event log?

I have a Linksys router; we have had problems
occasionally with the wireless part of it. What we do is
power it off, but it appears you already tried that. If
you are using a PCI wireless card, that might be your
problem. Go to www.linksys.com and check for updates.
if that doesn't help, you have two options: 1)Go wired,
buy a long wire ($8 for a 25 foot cord in Best Buy, check
telephone supplies) or 2) Buy an ethernet Bridge: these
things are awesome; they shouldn't ever need a firmware
update, they can attach and work with anything with a NIC
(Xbox, Linux, Mac, Windows, etc.) and if your OS screws
up, so what? Doesn't affect the bridge.

By the way, I have a problem with the new Xbox wireless
bridge from Microsoft: it won't connect to my Linksys
router. My channel is 6 on my router, but my bridge
(XBOX) won't go to channel 6 unless I go ad hoc, then it
doesn't work. I know the name is right, because I double
checked it using my bridge set-up.
