Windows Update won't install

Chris

I got a Windows XP update yesterday and it 'failed' three times so far to
install - Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.
Anyone knows what this is, why it won't install, or if I really need it?

A friend also gave me a seven year old Dell 4100 running XP Pro. It actually
dual boots to Win 2000 Pro also. That won't install Win XP SP 2 because this
copy of the OS "may not be valid". C'mon, this machine's been sitting in a
garage for five years. I'm pretty sure it's a valid copy, as my friend's
father is absolutely, impeccably honest. Is there any way around this, or do
I really need it?

Go to the MS download page, find the 1.1 Framework SP 1, donwload it, and
install it manually.

If it is a valid/licensed copy of the O/S, then get on the phone with MS
with the O/S's product-key and have them register/activate it again. It's
free. You can also do the same thing over the Internet to do the
registration/activation, and it's free too. You'll also need the Windows
authentication software install on the machine that checks with MS to see if
there is a valid/registered/activated copy of the O/S on the machine, before
it will allow updates to be applied to the computer.

Since this is kind of a (donet) related issue the (.Net Framework), you
needed some help.

However, this is a (dotnet) programmer's NG, and where you should have
posted to is MS.Public.Windows.XP.General.

Thanks. Can you point me in the right direction to get in touch with MS
about the SP2 issue. Trying to find this info now is mesmerizing,

You can post to MS.Public.Windows.XP.General.
